Obesessive Compulsive Disorder

my son likes to wash his hands. he is constantly getting up on the counter to get to the sink in the kitchen to run the water over his hands. whenever i go in the bathroom he runs in so that he can stand on the stool and wash his hands. i wonder if he is starting to develop OCD or something. some of us in my family have OCD issues, so i wouldn't be so surprised. i said something to my husband and all he said was "i blame you". i couldn't really deny that he gets it from me. i think derek has noticed plenty of my problems over the years. anyway, i just find it interesting. i wonder how much of it is nature and how much is nurture.

when keenan was small, everything had to be *perfect*. if his cheese slice tore, he had to *THROW IT AWAY AND GET A NEW ONE*. if he spilled even 1 drop of water on his shirt, off it came and a clean one went on. he even usually played with only a few toys at a time and would put those away before getting others out. anyway - i asked the pediatrician about it. he gave me a pamphlet and said, it's probably just a toddler thing, trying to take control of certain things in his life. and unless it became disruptive and controlled his entrie existence fromt he time he woke up till the time he went to bed, it wasn't a *TRUE* form of OCD. In other words we can all have certian OCD tendancies, but we are not REALLY OCD unless it controls our whole existence. *WHEW* - i guess that means we are ALL off the hook in the Miller Family (let derek know!) :)

Did you really post this at 2 am? Are you OCD about blogging? :)

I think everybody is a tad OCD about something. At least you can have peace of mind that he's washing off the germs.

I say let him wash and rinse a few cups or bowls in the sink. Kids like to play with bubbles and warm water. Teach him not to splash and give him a lot of praise when he has washed them. When Little Muffin gets bigger let her help too. She is probably old enough to do it now if you got a big enough chair for her to stand on. In fact, Let ChaChiBoy wash and Little Muffin dry. And don't forget to take a picture. This might just help ease the need to play in water. Water is a Tactile thing. It feels good. This might just make a fond memory for your family. Washing dishes together. They probably won't want to do it as teen-agers so enjoy it.

Maybe let little muffin rinse and YOU do the drying.
